Becoming more body positive is a journey that involves cultivating self-love and acceptance. The most important thing is to be patient and gentle with yourself, healing your body image takes time.
View your body the same way you would your relationship with your best friend. You don’t become best friends overnight, you build the foundations based on trust and respect, but that has to be maintained for the friendship to flourish.
Don’t allow yourself to disconnect from your body, this is your one and only body, you don’t have to always like it but you do have to live in peace with it and show it respect. It allows you to be a good friend, to make memories, to smile, to love and so many amazing things beyond what it looks like.
On the days where you are feeling negatively towards your body here as some steps to help along the way:
- Practice Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness you’d offer a friend. Acknowledge that everyone has insecurities.
- Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself thinking negatively about your body, reframe those thoughts. Focus on what your body can do rather than how it looks.
- Surround Yourself with Positivity: Engage with body-positive content on social media, read books, or follow accounts that celebrate diverse bodies.
- Celebrate Your Body: Make a list of things you appreciate about your body, celebrate your uniqueness and what makes you feel good.
- Limit Comparison: Avoid comparing yourself to others, especially on social media. Remember that everyone has their own struggles.
- Focus on Health, Not Size: Shift your mindset to prioritize overall health and well-being instead of just weight or appearance.
- Find Supportive Communities: Connect with groups or friends who promote body positivity and share similar values. Reach out to a friend about how you are feeling, sometimes talking these things through can help us understand why we are feeling this way.
- Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness practices like yoga or meditation to foster a deeper connection with your body.
- Be Patient: Remember that body positivity is a journey, and it’s okay to have ups and downs. Celebrate your progress along the way!
It’s all about embracing who you are and recognizing that every body is worthy of love and respect.
